Digital sales are brilliant for developers in most respects. Quick metrics, simple to update code, easy to discount or offer in sales, and rapid payments from the publisher. However, for publishers they can act as a double-edged sword as digital sales information is rarely shared with the rest of the world.
Sony needs to publish the number of its PS Vita digital sales from the start to show developers that it is worth developing for and so publishers can add the digital sales to retail numbers to create a more realistic chart. That way everyone can see just how well things are going and a big part of the "PSV is doomed" argument can be removed.
With the tech-literate Japanese gaming market, I'm sure the majority of games purchases are now digital and Sony is only damaging itself by refusing to reveal the numbers.
