After all the fuss about a possible updated model in Japan, Sony has filed for changes to the current 2000 model in the US with an FCC report on the 2001 update, with changes in some components and mucking about with the antenna. Hopefully new radios mean better WiFi performance, as the Vita's download speed has always sucked.
These could be also purely housekeeping updates, the component makers often bring out newer, cheaper versions of a part, but they still need to recertified. Or it could signal that Sony has something to help drive a price cut to be announced at E3. These new parts are probably only saving Sony a few cents, but overall it could help knock down enough of the cost to help Sony trim the price.
